How to Apply & Care
An attar is best worn like a secret — a single drop on your pulse points, where warmth gently awakens its soul. Let it linger softly on your wrist, behind the ear, or at the base of your throat, weaving fragrance into your presence through the day.
On Clothes: When fragrance meets fabric, let it be with grace. Take a drop onto your palm or wrist, then lightly pat the fragrance onto the collar, chest, or shoulders to let the aroma linger, while avoiding direct application that may stain fabrics.
Care: Keep your attar cherished as the artisans intended — stored in a cool, dark place, away from the sun’s gaze. Tightly sealed, it will remain timeless, carrying the heritage of Kannauj in every drop
Note: For individuals with sensitive skin, we recommend applying our attars to clothing or fabrics instead of directly on skin to avoid any potential irritation; please perform a patch test if you're unsure about skin sensitivity

"From Kannauj, With Love"
Attars, also known as Ittars, are natural perfume oils that have been used for centuries in India. Unlike synthetic perfumes, attars are made using the hydro-distillation method, capturing the pure essence of flowers, herbs, and woods. They are highly concentrated, skin-safe, and have a unique ability to blend with your body’s chemistry, creating a personalized scent experience.
The Legacy of Attars
Kannauj, often called the “Perfume Capital of India”, has been the heart of attar-making for over 2,000 years. This ancient city’s fragrance tradition dates back to the Vedic era, with mentions of perfumed oils in scriptures and royal chronicles. During the Mughal period, Kannauj’s attars were so prized that they were offered in royal courts and used to scent palaces, fabrics, and even fountains. Today, this heritage continues almost unchanged, making every drop of Kannauj attar a bridge between the past and the present.
The Traditional Process – Deg-Bhapka Distillation
Attar-making is an art form that requires patience and precision. The process begins with carefully harvested flowers, herbs, spices, or aromatic roots placed in a copper still called a deg along with water. The mixture is gently heated over a wood fire, allowing the natural vapors to rise and travel through hollow bamboo pipes into a receiver container known as a bhapka. Here, the fragrant vapors are captured and absorbed into a natural base oil — traditionally sandalwood, though other natural carriers may also be used depending on the attar.
This slow distillation can take several hours to days, allowing the fragrance to fully develop its richness. The resulting perfume oil is highly concentrated, alcohol-free, and long-lasting, making it a luxurious and sustainable alternative to modern synthetic perfumes.
A Sustainable Craft
The making of attars uses natural ingredients and low-energy methods, producing minimal waste and preserving the environment. Choosing a natural attar means embracing a slow, conscious luxury — one that connects you to the earth, the artisan, and centuries of tradition.
By choosing Sumaavi Attars, you help keep this ancient craft alive, support skilled artisans in Kannauj, and bring home a fragrance that carries both history and soul.
